Professor Robert (Ted) Gutsche Jr

Professor of Digital Cultures

Professor Robert (Ted) Gutsche Jr (www.robertgutschejr.com) researches and teaches digital cultures — spanning social media, journalism, and AI — at Florida Atlantic University, in the US. A former journalist who reported for The Washington Post, the Chicago Tribune, and regional and local news media, Professor Gutsche applies critical and cultural frameworks to media production and interpretation, analyzing how digital content creators act as both agents of change and conduits of dominant narratives in global and local contexts. His work examines issues of power in journalism, political and environmental communication, and in discourse surrounding emerging technologies that shape media authority.

Previously, Professor Gutsche served as Senior Lecturer in Critical Digital Media Practice in Media and Cultural Studies at Lancaster University, in the UK, and has held a Visiting Professorship in the Faculty of Informatics at Vytautas Magnus University, in Lithuania. Prior to that, he was Assistant Professor in the Digital Media Studies program in the Department of Journalism + Media at Florida International University, in the US, researching and teaching immersive media cultures, entrepreneurialism in digital media and journalism, and cultures associated with surveillance, social movements, and media systems.

Professor Gutsche’s collaborative project with the Media Innovation Studio – tentatively titled “Prototyping News Futures: Designing Preferable and Problematic Futures for News Engagement” – applies creative and inclusive methods to understand what and how social futures are embedded into imagining tomorrow’s news technologies and cultural forms.
