Ed Walker

Ed Walker is an experienced media leader, editor and entrepreneur. Now an audience development and editorial consultant with Alma, the consultancy business he founded in 2023, Ed draws on more than 15 years experience across hyperlocal, regional and national journalism to advise clients on audience growth and engagement strategies across digital media and beyond.

He spent much of his career at Reach PLC, the UK’s largest multimedia commercial publisher, and was described as a ‘key part’ of its digital transformation agenda. Ed led newsrooms in new ways of working, edited a number of regional titles and held senior editorial roles in many of Reach’s newsrooms from Wales, to Liverpool, to Birmingham, to Reading, to Newcastle and everywhere in-between. He was also the first editor-in-chief of InYourArea, Reach’s hyperlocal news site and app, which he led to become one of the UK’s top 20 news websites, becoming the third most-downloaded news app in the country and the AOP award for best social good campaign.

Alongside this he set up and founded one of the UK’s leading hyperlocal titles, Blog Preston, after he finished his journalism studies at UCLan in 2008. Ed remains as non-executive director after spending more than a decade reporting on the city of Preston and also helping develop and nurture future journalistic talent through Blog Preston‘s partnership with UCLan. He’s also raised more than £150,000 for the city’s homeless shelter through the Big PNE Sleep Out events he’s helped organise in partnership with Preston North End.

His relationship with UCLan stretches back a number of years and he has been a leader-in-residence with the university’s journalism department since 2019 and is part of the visiting faculty for the journalism leadership and innovation programme – which Ed completed in 2022 – and he focuses on working with the cohort on journalism innovation strategies and new product developments.
