News Futures Forum Academics Working Group Meets to Advance Research and Collaboration in Public-Interest Journalism

The News Futures Forum, an initiative that has emerged from the News Futures 2035 project has convened an academics working group at the Media Innovation Studio to focus on enhancing public-interest news research.

Researchers from universities including Bournemouth University, Coventry University, Edinburgh Napier University, the University of Liverpool, Liverpool John Moores University, Manchester Metropolitan University, and scholars from the University of Central Lancashire including News Futures 2035 principal investigator Dr François Nel met in Preston on Monday 15th July and made significant strides in identifying research and collaboration opportunities.

The group has committed to a comprehensive scoping study aimed at mapping existing research and methodologies within the field. A collaborative approach, similar to previous successful projects undertaken by the News Futures 2035 team, has been proposed to ensure a thorough and inclusive analysis.

Central to the discussions has been the need to measure and understand the value of public interest journalism. Participants have emphasised the importance of developing case studies that illustrate how public interest news impacts communities and society. By showcasing these real-world examples, the group aims to demonstrate the tangible benefits of journalism research.

In addition, bridging the gap between academic research and journalism practice will be a key focus. The group is exploring ways to engage industry professionals more deeply in the research process to ensure that findings are practically relevant. Potential collaborations with organisations like BBC Media Action are being considered to further this goal.

Addressing concerns about accessibility, the group has underscored the need to simplify academic jargon and communicate findings clearly to journalists. Clear and inclusive communication is crucial for making research findings actionable and understandable.

Funding and resources remain a priority, with discussions centred on securing financial support from diverse sources, including both academic and industry partnerships. Strategies are being developed to enhance funding opportunities and support ongoing research initiatives.

To ensure broad participation, the group is organising workshops and “lunch and learn” sessions to engage journalists and gather their input. These interactive sessions are intended to foster collaboration and gather valuable insights from a wide range of stakeholders.
