It’s the Easter break at the University so things are quieter than usual in the studio. But beneath that quiet exterior..
In the very first Media Innovation Dispatch, we mentioned that the Homing project, which Mark Lochrie helped develop, was exhibited at the DataPublics conference at Lancaster University. You can now access the app Mark built through the conference resource pages.
As this newsletter goes out John Mills will be recovering from a whistle stop tour to Italy for a session at the International Journalism Conference talking about the Newsthings project. You can watch the whole session with John and Trinity Mirror’s Alison Gow below.
We’re lucky to work with some brilliant people here in the studio. One is Onno Baudouin, a creative technologist and facilitator. Amongst Onno’s amazing work is a unique piece of facilitation software called Remerge which we use a lot in our research and strategy work. He’s been working with Clare Cook, analysing the data from the Cast project exploring how to build hyperlocal broadcasting networks that leverage a WIFI mesh networks, capable of sustaining hyperlocal content discovery and interactions from electronic devices without the need for a mobile application. The number crunching is already generating some interesting conversations around proximity broadcasting (and more geeky stuff too) in the office.
This week in the space.
Another quiet week in the space and shorter week thanks to the Easter weekend but still some great activity.
We share the fourth floor of the Media Factory with the award winning Northern Lights team. They offer business support and Incubation facilities at the university which includes a wide range of networking events. On Tuesday it was a User Experience themed event including a keynote from Peter Stasiak of @effectivedes. If you like the look of the event check out #nlnetworking and their eventbrite page (Credit to Lateef Badat and GlobalAmigos for the pics)
Things that caught our eye….
- Five fantastic maker ideas for your library
- The classic Tamagotchi toy is back
- The National Festival of Making
- How we gave our studio WWE-style entrances using iBeacons and Sonos
Finally, a thanks to the UCLAN marketing team for a suitably on brand coloured egg cosy and the creme egg! If you’re taking time off have a good Easter break and see you next week.
