European Media Labs converge in Bordeaux

Over the last three years, the Media Innovation Studio has worked with the Global Alliance for Media Innovation (GAMI) at the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) to fire collaboration between industry, academia and start-up communities.

At the end of September, GAMI brought together 20 representatives from Media Labs from across Europe at Sud Ouest newspaper’s Théophraste accelerator in Bordeaux. Labs included Media Lab Bayern, BBC News Labs, DMJX Media Maker Space, Stibo Accelerator and AFP Media Lab.

During the session, UCLan undergraduate interns Andreea Dulgheru and Ben Carter presents a study of labs, their operations, motivations and aspirations.The Media Innovation Studio’s John Mills spoke about the Media Innovation Studio and the Google DNI funded NewsThings project.

The second day of the meeting saw the labs come together to find points of collaboration, with a few to working together on key issues over the coming months and years. These included personalisation, smart cities and VR/AR development.
